Get Inspired: Libraries and why they are so COOL architecturally and conceptually

We are living in a fast-paced world filled with information technology, communication devices, and smart appliances.  Everyday, there seems to be a new invention created with smarter capabilities, a must have to keep up with the speed of today’s expectations.  In fact, the world seems to be going virtual, from the shopping experience, to the social experience, to the work experience. Where does the brick and mortar exist in this virtual downloadving?  How do we create physical foundations in a world transfixed to living through the screen space.  The answer? Look to the Libraries! The Library has been leading the way in adapting to this digital age.  In fact, they are prospering. You may have noticed that the libraries are changing. They are being remodeled, opened up, becoming architecturally savvy, beautifying neighborhoods.  They are becoming Hubs for communities offering computer labs, conference rooms, and spaces for communities to talk, make, and create.  Libraries are for the people, and the cities that are investing in the libraries to create these changes, are investing in the people, and building a solid city foundation by offering the citizens access to information, education, and opportunities.  El Paso has been investing in its libraries. Check out the Esperanza-Moreno by branch by IDEA Architects or the Irving Schwartz branch.  Super Cool. Go El Paso!, Go Libraries! Laying a Foundation and How it Applies to Life.

Laying a Foundation in a Building and how it Applies to Life.

IMG_1273Laying a foundation is one of the most important parts in constructing a building.  The foundation

is what distributes the weight of the building as well as what keeps it straight and sturdy, as well as dry.  If the foundation is compromised the entire integrity of the building will be compromised which means throwing money out the window, literally.  The word foundation is defined as 1. The lowest load-bearing part of a building. 2. An underlying basis or principle for something. 3. The action of establishing an institution or organization on a permanent basis.

Words that stick out from these definitions are Load-bearing, principles, establishment, and permanent. Buildings are like people in many ways. In a Grandeur scheme laying a solid foundation in life, will establish mindsets and strong wills that can withstand life’s adversaries and will ultimately and definitely bring life successes.    JMKW Development builds solid foundations for any size business. EL PASO has a nationally renowned NET ZERO Building: Paisano Green Community

NET ZERO We just finished April ,which is Earth month, but that doesn’t mean that thinking about the Earth ends there. Its a year long quest, a lifetime quest. Ecology is the study of organisms and their environments. For humans, we could look at the study of humans and their relationship with the urban environment and their relationship with the natural environment.  With the discussion of climate change, there is an incentive for buildings to become more sustainable. Last month we talked about becoming LEED Certified by meeting certain LEED requirements and this month we get to talk about what it means to be a Net Zero building.

Net Zero Buildings are defined as buildings that generate at least 100% of their own power from onsite renewable sources.

As an example Paisano Green Community in El Paso TX is the first Net Zero Senior Housing project in the US.  It is also LEED platinum certified with electric vehicle charging station, refrigerated air, low flow water fixtures and commodes, air source heat pump water heater, solar panels, wind turbines, and a tapestry garden.

Another example is Cornell Tech’s Bloomberg Center, designed by Morphosis, which is aiming to be Net Zero and will feature solar arrays, geothermal heat pumps, and a chilled-beam system. It also includes a 40,000 rainwater harvesting tank.

In 2017, 67 buildings were verified as Net Zero in the U.S. and in Canada. 2018 is showing 415 buildings are in construction or in the evaluation process of becoming net Zero.  That’s a 26% increase.

Think Green: What does it mean to be LEED Certified?

bio-b_leed copyWhat does it mean for a building to be LEED Certified?  LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The programs is focused on primarily new commercial-building projects and is based on a points system. LEED provides a framework to create efficient, cost-saving green buildings and a LEED certified building is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. Like the BioDesign Building B building on the Tempe Campus at Arizona State University which has been LEED Platinum certified. If you are interested in having a project become LEED certified contact JMKW Development at (915) 519-4213 and we can guide you to make the best decisions for you business, as well as for the environment.

The Turnkey process. What does that mean?

turnarchitecturekey or a turnkey project (also spelled turn-key)

is a type of project that is constructed so that it can be sold to any buyer as a completed product. What this means is that the contractor supplies the essential design, taking on all construction and building elements up to the finishing touches of the cabinets, carpet, and utilities.  The owner essentially gets to walk in and start up. At JMKW Development, Our turn-key process allows us to be a one-stop shop for our clients. We handle every aspect of building your franchise out from start to finish, including the architecture, interior design, signage, and more. Do not worry about dealing with multiple general contractors, when you can depend on us to take care of everything during your commercial construction project.

Get Inspired: How Buildings relate to us and our Environments:

moonrise-el-paso-texas-alfredo-martinezEl Paso Photograph – Moonrise El Paso Texas by Alfredo Martinez

Everyday we walk around surrounded by these amazing gigantic structures that house us,cdnassets.hw store our wares, and are places where we work and make things.  How do we truly relate to such structures, these buildings that get built everyday.  What type of environments do they create and how do these buildings relate to each other?  Take El Paso for example.  In El Paso you have a city that is divided into sections by Franklin Mountains State Park, the largest urban park in the U.S.. How does the architecture relate to this park?  Do we see the architecture allowing more views to the beautiful landscape?  El Paso sits on the intersection of three states and on two countries.  How does this play into the architecture of the city?  How does this melding of cultures influence the aesthetic choices of the architecture?  Thom Mayne from Morphosis Architects has been awarded the American Institute of Architects Gold medal for his innovation in designing systems of buildings that reflect their environments.  His work is conceptually based, spurring from areas of Biology, Natural ScieS1Q8v2znces, economic trends, fashion, and the list goes on.  His perspective on how buildings influence cultures, environments, as well as other buildings is fascinating.

The next time you are on a walk. Look at the buildings around you and take a moment see how they impact you?

You can hear more from Thom Mayne here at his TED talk
